    WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The polyphenols found in red wine are thought to help prevent Alzheimer's disease, and new research from Purdue University and Mount Sinai School of Medicine has shown that some of those compounds in fact reach the brain. Mario Ferruzzi, a Purdue associate professor of food science; Connie Weaver, Purdue's head of foods and nutrition; and Elsa Janle, a Purdue associate professor of foods and nutrition, found that the amount of polyphenols from grapeseed extract that can reach a rat's brain is as much as 200 percent higher on the 10th consecutive day of feeding as compared to the first. Many previous experiments, in which absorption was measured after single or sporadic doses, often found very little, if any, of the bioactive polyphenols reaching brain tissues. However, more chronic exposure appears to improve absorption. More>>
  • ( ) Free Program Offered For Dealing With Alzheimer's

    The Alzheimer�s Association, Northwest Ohio Chapter has joined with the Ohio Department of Aging and the Benjamin Rose Institute to implement a free program that will help both individuals with memory problems as well as their family members who are caring for them. This new program is called Reducing Disability in Alzheimer�s Disease (RDAD).

    The RDAD program is designed to help teach older adults who may suffer from memory problems how to do some simple exercises to improve their overall health. The program also teaches family members about symptoms to watch for and how to care for persons with memory problems. This program hopes to improve the ability of the person with memory problems to carry out activities of daily living while also helping family members provide assistance to their relative. More>>

    Support groups for Alzheimer's caregivers, those suffering from grief and loss, and seniors seeking to improve their nutrition are available at the Center of Concern in Park Ridge. The center also offers affordable personal counseling to adults of all ages. Call center social worker Myrna Fogarty, (847) 823-0453. The center is at 1580 N. Northwest Highway, Suite 310, Park Ridge. The center also offers housing counseling for seniors and others seeking affordable housing, programs designed to prevent homelessness, in-home health care referrals, friendly visitors for the homebound and volunteer opportunities in the office and in the field.

    Center tax counselors are available to help eligible residents apply for Illinois Circuit Breaker property tax relief grants and license plate discounts, Illinois Cares Rx (prescription drug assistance), the senior citizen real estate tax deferral, and the senior citizen tax assessment freeze.   • ( ) RXi's DiPalma hired as EnVivo CFO

    EnVivo is developing small molecule therapeutics for disorders of the central nervous system, focusing on Alzheimer’s disease, cognitive disorders and schizophrenia. Prior to joining RXi, DiPalma was co-founder, president and CEO of Catalyst Oncology, which focused on personalized medicine approaches for cancer. He earlier served as CFO at companies including Milkhaus Laboratories, Phytera, Aquila Biopharmaceuticals and Athena Diagnostics. DiPalma earned an MBA from Babson College and bachelor of science degree in business administration from the University of Massachusetts. In July EnVivo announced positive results, including a reversal of behavior characteristic of Alzheimer’s disease in animal testing, for its drug candidate EVP-0962.   • ( ) Week in Reston

    The Alzheimer's Association Memory Walk is the nation's largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer care, support and research. Conducted annually in hundreds of communities across the country, the event calls on volunteers of all ages to become champions in the fight against Alzheimer's.

    In Reston the walk will be Saturday, Sept. 26 at the Reston Town Center. Registration begins at 9 a.m. followed by Opening Ceremonies and Walk at 10 a.m.
