GUELPH—A Guelph woman will hike up one of the world's tallest mountains to help others overcome Alzheimer's disease.

Christina Pilgrim will climb Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Africa, to raise money for the Alzheimer Society of Guelph-Wellington. She has already raised almost $17,000 and hopes to get to $20,000.

The 27-year-old's climb is scheduled to begin Sept. 15 and last until Sept. 24. It is organized by the Alzheimer Society of British Columbia and aims to raise money for local Alzheimer's groups. She will be joined by six other Canadian fundraising climbers, as well as guides and a Canadian doctor.

Pilgrim has never hiked a mountain before but she has been training since January to prepare for the challenge. “I've definitely spent a lot of time outside this summer trying to get ready and get used to hiking," she said. More>>

  • ( ) Alzheimer's Society Comment On: Laing & Buisson Care Of Elderly

Figures from Laing and Buisson's newly released Care of Elderly People UK Market Survey 2009 have predicted that the number of care home places will start to grow, following a previous decline.

The survey also highlights that third party top-ups may be more frequent than previously estimated.

'Laing & Buisson's Care of Elderly People survey suggests the demand for care home places is set to grow. The majority of people living in care homes have some form of dementia making it the key focus for the sector. It is essential that staff get the training they need to provide good dementia care.

Dementia care is hugely inconsistent and standards need to be drastically improved - as highlighted by the National Dementia Strategy for England. Care providers, regulators and commissioners need to work together to ensure good dementia care becomes the rule rather than the exception. More>>
  • ( ) Nurses in Walpole stand up to familiar foe

All money raised will go to a local chapter of the Alzheimer's Association.

Director of Nurses Melissa Cappuccino said the money will go to Alzheimer's research, professional training and medicine that may be able to slow the progress of the crippling disease.

Cappuccino wished she had more time than she would get when her then 48-year-old mother was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's. Melissa Cappuccino was just 15 then.

She said the disease started slowly, with her mother forgetting to do simple things, like putting detergent into the washing machine while doing a load of laundry. It progressed to the point where her outgoing mother wasn't able to do anything but lay in bed all day.

"It was an eye-opening experience," Cappuccino said. More>>
