) One family's struggle with Alzheimers
In Washington State alone there are 100 thousand people with Alzheimers. Today I met with one woman who has a story about the struggles her family went through when dealing with the disease. "The hardest part is that my kids don't get to know my mom," Thornhill said.
Candy's mother Valerie Poland passed away four months ago, it was the day before Mothers Day.
"We told her to go.. It's fine to go, we're all going to be fine, and she finally took her last breath on her terms."
It was her last breath after nine years of struggling with the disease It's a disease more than five million adults have in this country, a number Candy says is devastating.
"Unlike cancer where you can sometimes get treatment, this disease.. More>>

) Early Alzheimer's: too cruel to pass on to your children
He has younger-onset Alzheimer's. The DNA test he took seven years ago revealed it was in his future. And last November the cognitive tests he has been doing every year confirmed what he had already suspected: his short-term memory is starting to go. ''It can be very embarrassing,'' said the Yarra Valley horticulturist. ''Someone will tell me something, then a bit later I ask them the same question.''
It will get worse, and Mr Lovell knows exactly what is in store. His mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in her early 50s, and he spent a decade tackling the problems the condition imposed: a relatively young and active body holding a declining mind; anger and confusion; and bouncing between nursing homes designed for the frail and immobile.
''I will never forget,'' Mr Lovell said. More>>

) NARFE reaches $8 million mark
Members of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association (NARFE) have reached the $8 million mark in their giving to combat Alzheimer's disease. Since NARFE took on Alzheimer's as a national project in 1985, members have raised money through progressively higher fundraising goals. Through a partnership with the Alzheimer's Association, Chicago, Ill., all donations go to Alzheimer's research. NARFE's extraordinary giving record makes it the Alzheimer's Association's largest membership organization donor. The disease now affects as many as five million Americans. "Since we began our association-wide coordinated giving program to support Alzheimer's research over 24 years ago, NARFE members have shared a devotion to conquering a disease that plagues so many in our generation," said Margaret L.
