Kuakini Medical Center will receive $1.1 million to further studies examining the root causes of Alzheimer's disease and dementia, Senator Daniel K. Inouye announced today.

The funds were awarded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) to Kuakini Medical Center to further the research of the Kuakini Honolulu-Asia Aging Study (Kuakini HAAS).

"Alzheimers and dementia rob so many of precious years at the end of their life," said Senator Inouye. "This funding is crucial to continuing research that benefits not only individuals in Hawaii suffering from dementia but also their family members, and to future generations."

Dr. Lon White, Principal Investigator for the study at Pacific Health Research Institute, said the study will further the understanding of the causes of dementia and help identify preventive strategies to reduce the human and public health burden from this affliction. More>>

Mr Salter took up the parachute challenge on Sunday after visiting the Alzheimer's Society Open Day in Reading in July. He also managed to raise nearly £1,000 in sponsorship for the charity.
Mr Salter said he was extremely grateful to friends and family who helped and supported him.
He added: “It was an absolutely incredible experience which I would thoroughly recommend to anyone who enjoys a challenge.
“The worst bit for me was waiting two hours for a gap in the clouds to appear so we could go up for the jump.
“That was long time for the imagination to run riot but I managed to keep it all together and was frankly relieved once we got the all clear to take off.
“This jump has given me memories that will last a lifetime and hope the money that is raised through the many events organised to mark Alzheimer's Day [on Sunday, September 21] will improve both the lives and the memories of those suffering with Alzheimer's."
The jump took place at the Old Sarum Airfield, Wiltshire, and he was accompanied by Gordon Blamire, from Skydive Southcoast. More>>
