  • ( ) New program helps patients, loved ones deal with Alzheimer's disease

    The three-part series, open to people who have recently been diagnosed with Alzheimer's or other types of dementia and their caregivers, begins Sept. 23 at Weymouth Senior Center. Advance registration is required by calling 781-682-3816.

    Bernadette Graycar, outreach worker at Weymouth Elder Services, said the program is free, but both the caregiver and person with memory loss must attend. The monthly support group begins in November and runs through June. It is sponsored by Weymouth Elder Services, the Norwell VNA and Hospice and The Visiting Angels Home Care of Marshfield. The Weymouth Rotary Club is funding it.

    Jane Sprunt Meiling beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend passed away September 11, 2009 from complications of Alzheimer's. She was well known for her kindness, charity, and concern for others over self. Her radiant smile was always with her even until the end. Jane was born June 1, 1937 to William Handy Sprunt and Clarissa Olive Scofield. Jane and her twin sister, Jean, were the youngest of five children. Jane graduated from East High School in 1955 and the University of Utah in 1959 with a BS degree in Political Science. While at the University she was a member of Chi Omega, Spurs, and Cwean. After graduation, Jane worked at the LDS Church as a legal secretary. She married Gerald Meiling on July 20, 1962 in the LDS Logan temple. A faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Jane served in every auxiliary of the church but was best known for her service to the youth. More>>

    Margaret Atwood has pulled out of the Emirates Airline International Festival of Literature after the Dubai-based fair pulled a book that refers to a gay relationship, British papers report. Penguin planned to launch Geraldine Bedell's The Gulf Between Us at this month's fair, but was told to cancel those plans because the book was not expected to get past censors. Bedell has blogged for the Guardian, criticizing the decision.

    Nearly half of people older than 85 develop Alzheimer's disease or a related dementia. The Alzheimer's Association offers programs and lists the 10 warning signs. Find out more by attending the educational program Understanding Memory Loss conducted by the Alzheimer's Association from 11 a.m. to noon Sept. 29 at Fishkill Senior Friendship Center, First Reformed Church of Fishkill, 1153 Main St., Fishkill.
