  • ( ) LIVES: The curious case of Eugene Morency

He died of Alzheimer's disease Tuesday, Sept. 8, at the Hunt Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Danvers.

Naturally, he was known as Gene, but he had another nickname that has a story, but not an explanation.

When he walked into a room one night, a family member pulled an Ed McMahon.

"Heeeeere's Gurpy!" he said, and Gurp it was from then on.

He was born June 5, 1922, in Salem, and except for a stint in the Army Air Forces in World War II, Salem is where he lived all his life.

He was a flight engineer in a crew that flew "The Hump," the eastern end of the Himalayan Mountains between India and China, bringing supplies to Gen. Chiang Kai-shek. The day before D-Day, June 6, 1944, they also flew a load of supplies in for the Normandy invasion.

After the war, he and his wife, Betty, had three children, Phyllis, Judy and Robert. More>>

That's a disorder that decreases the heart's ability to pump blood out of its upper chambers as effectively as in normal rhythm. In fact, it usually decreases the pumping by about 25 percent. It's trouble because there's a potential for the blood to form clots in the enlarged or dysfunctional atrium, which can cause strokes if the clots are eventually pushed out. More>>

  • ( ) Alzheimer's society requires volunteers

Fall sessions of the Alzheimer Society's caregiver support groups will start over the next two weeks at the society's office, 2135 Richmond St., Windsor, and in Leamington and Amherstburg. The bimonthly gatherings afford caregivers the opportunity to share concerns and receive information about dementia and its progression. Phone the society at 519-974-2220 for information.

Volunteer Day Away program aids are needed for this popular activity which provides social interaction for people with Alzheimer and related dementia. Volunteers assist the client support staff to help create a friendly and warm environment and to facilitate socialization for the participants.

Volunteer Day Away van drivers are also needed to drive the van while accompanied by a client support staff and pick up and/or drop off Day Away clients who would not otherwise have transportation. More>>

  • ( ) The simple diet that can fight arthritis and Alzheimer's disease

What this diet will do is help prevent illnesses such as heart disease, Alzheimer's and possibly cancer, and significantly ease the pain of chronic conditions such as arthritis.

The 'anti-inflammatory' diet is based on the principle that many health problems are linked to chronic inflammation caused by an over-active immune system.
